Custody can be granted to one of the parents by court order as a result of a divorce or some other legal action.
Custody can be granted to others (grandparents, other relatives, or non-relatives) by action of the court.
A notarized statement by the parent or other person “giving custody of a child” is NOT acceptable. A lawyer should be contacted to assist in this process.
