Early College of Health and Sciences Fact Sheet
Basics
- The school will open in the Fall of 2006
- The Wake Early College of Health and Sciences is a partnership between the Wake County Public School System, Wake Technical Community College and WakeMed Health & Hospitals.
Wake Technical Community College
- Houses the school on its Health Sciences Campus, adjacent to WakeMed, which includes classrooms, laboratories and other resources for the students
- College faculty will serve as part of the instructional team
- Students will be able to enroll in the college's courses
WakeMed Health & Hospitals
- Provides job shadowing and internships
- Employees will serve as part of instructional team
- Offers potential employment for students in the hospital system
School Details
- Students will receive a more personalized educational experience in a small school setting with no more than 400 students
- Academic instruction will center around a health sciences theme
- Students will fulfill the North Carolina high school graduation requirements while earning free transferable college credit
- Students will partake in internships, job shadowing and community service experiences
- Students may earn an Associate Degree from Wake Technical Community College; students may transfer their credits to a four-year college or university to accelerate their studies; or students may choose to join the workforce in the health sciences field
- Students will check their PULSE - Participation, Understanding, Leadership, Scholarship and Excellence - on a daily basis as part of an advisory program to keep them focused on their goals
- The school is located on Wake Technical Community College's Health Sciences Campus
- Students will follow the Wake Technical Community College calendar and will benefit from a year-round instructional program that includes the summer High Achievers Program
- Students will be able to interact with both their peers and college students who see a clear purpose for their learning
- The school is part of the Wake County Public School System, so there is no charge for students to attend the school
- Transportation will be provided for students via school system buses
- Students will use the food service facilities available in the Allied Health Center
- The school's emphasis will be on academics; athletic teams and other extracurricular activities offered by comprehensive traditional high schools will not be offered by the Early College
- All rising ninth-grade students in Wake County are eligible to apply for admission to the school by completing a declaration packet; packets can be downloaded from the web or you can have one sent to you by phoning 919-850-1793
