About Us

The Office of Social Studies exists to provide educational social science resources for students and teachers across the K-12 continuum. As a core subject, social studies is a vitally important content area which helps to motivate students to be nurtured into productive citizens of their local communities, state, nation and world. This program has a positive impact upon all grade levels, training students in history, geography, economics, political science, current events, character education and the social sciences. A social studies standard course of study exists for grades kindergarten through eleventh grade as well as goals and objectives for many other high school electives. Students must take social studies all three years in middle school. Additionally, three social studies courses are required for graduation from high school—world history, civics & economics and United States history. Students are encouraged to take a fourth unit or more of social studies in high school and can choose from a wide range of informative and exciting electives, which include Advanced Placement social studies classes, statewide electives and locally developed electives.
