Twenty-four schools recognized by Magnet Schools of America

Twenty-four WCPSS schools have earned 2014 Merit Awards from Magnet Schools of America, a national organization that promotes equity and educational excellence in magnet programs.

The annual awards recognize programs in the U.S. that demonstrate a strong commitment to academic standards, innovation, diversity, specialized teaching staffs and parent and community involvement. Wake County has 34 magnet schools with programs focused on the arts, technology, world languages, the International Baccalaureate Programme, and more.

More than 300 schools and programs applied for awards this year, and were selected after a rigorous review and scoring process. Twelve Wake County public schools earned the top title, School of Excellence. Twelve Wake County magnet schools earned the title of School of Distinction.

“It is truly an honor for Wake County to have 24 schools earn national recognition from among all of the programs and schools that were reviewed,” said Deputy Superintendent Cathy Q. Moore. “This is a reflection of the hard work teachers and staff have put into building strong, innovative programs for our students.”

Schools will receive banners and plaques to display at their schools. Staff members will have the opportunity to attend a national conference in May to be recognized, and to learn about new National Standards for Magnet Schools, and a new national certification process.
