Board of Education appoints Tom Benton to fill vacant District 1 board seat

The Board of Education voted on February 5 to appoint Thomas Benton to fill the board’s vacant District 1 seat. The board interviewed eight candidates throughout the afternoon before appointing Benton at the end of its regular meeting. See Benton’s video message >>

Benton is career educator who is known to many parents through his work as principal of Durant Road Middle School from 1994 to 2005.

He has also worked at Sanderson, Athens Drive, Zebulon and Enloe high schools in Wake County. Later in his career, Benton also worked as a coach for challenged schools and trained other school administrators through the N.C. Principals and Assistant Principals Association. He currently teaches in the Gardner Webb University Masters in Middle School program.

Benton will serve the remainder of former board member Chris Malone’s term, which expires in November 2013. Malone stepped down in December in order to serve in his newly elected position in the N.C. General Assembly.

The board began advertising the position in December. Candidates were required to live in District 1 and submit a letter of interest, a resume, and three letters of recommendation to be considered for the role. Read more about the residents who submitted applications. >>
