Broughton High boys and Green Hope High girls won the state 4-A title on Saturday in the N.C. High School Athletic Association cross country championships in Kernersville.
The Broughton High boys had three runners, Will Roberson, Asher Smith-Rose and Jeremy Brown in the top 10. The Cary High boys finished second and Millbrook High boys fourth.
Bakri Abushouk of Cary High won the individual boys’ championship. The senior set the pace for the race, led all the way and finished 15 seconds ahead of the next runner.
This was the Green Hope High girls’ fourth consecutive state title. Their 17:48:03 time was the second best team time since 2002, just behind the 2011 Green Hope state title time of 17:27:09. In the girls’ team championships, Broughton High girls finished third and Millbrook High ninth.
Megan Sullivan of Broughton High won the individual girls’ championship. The junior took the lead in the last 1,000 meters and crossed the line in first. Maura McDonnell of Green Hope finished third. Rebekah Greengrass of Panther Creek finished fifth.
