Leesville Road High School band performs for British dignitaries

The Leesville Road High School band welcomed distinguished visitors from London on October 25, officially accepting an invitation to perform in the 2014 London New Year’s Day Parade and Festival.

The school held a special assembly to welcome Councillor Catherine Longworth, who is a former Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster, as well as parade Executive Director Robert Bone. The Symphonic Band performed pieces including “The Star Spangled Banner,” “God Save the Queen” and the “Olympic Theme.”

This will be the first European trip for the 84-member symphonic band, but the second time a music group from the school has been invited to perform in a prestigious London event. In 2008, the school’s Capital Pride vocal ensemble also traveled to London to sing at the inaugural London International Choral Festival.

The London New Year’s Day Parade and Festival boasts supporters that include Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and The Prime Minister of Great Britain. The parade comprises more than 8,000 performers and a street audience of more than a half-million people, as well as millions of television viewers.

In addition to appearing in the parade, the Leesville Road band is also scheduled to perform in a Gala Concert in prestigious Cadogan Hall, the home of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
