Turner Creek Road Elementary School Holds Dedication Ceremony
The new Turner Creek Road Elementary School held a dedication ceremony, Tuesday, April 26, 2005, to mark its first year. Through a live video feed, the student body was able to watch a fellow student fill a time capsule, the PTA president donate a bench, and staff unveil a student-decorated mural. In the afternoon, the entire school gathered for a student-led dedication program.
Fifth-grader Emily Venezie and Assistant Principal Mary Ellen Leach filled a time capsule with items that the student body voted to
include. When Turner Creek students open the capsule in 10 years, they will find a school T-shirt and magnet, copy of the school song, school lunch menu and prices, floor plan, sample report card, dedication program, drawing of the mural, and one of Lance Armstrong’s “Live Strong” bracelets.
“We’re sure our school will change a lot in the next 10 years,” said Venezie. “When students open up the capsule, they’ll see what the first year at Turner Creek was like.”
Principal Jan Hargrove and staff unveiled a six-foot by 12-foot ceramic tile mural composed of more than 200 tiles students decorated. To keep it a surprise, the mural was covered by a black sheet announcing “Coming April 26” until the unveiling.
“We’re proud of the artwork,” said Hargrove. “I think it will make students and visitors feel welcome.”
Turner Creek’s afternoon dedication program included choral performances, student readings and a year-in-review slide show. Staff announced the results of a student vote for school song, and then the entire school sang “I’m A Little Tree Frog” together. Hargrove read “The School That Wake Built,” her own creation, in honor of those who helped fund, build and staff the new school.
Two hundred kites, with tree frogs – the school mascot – dangling from the tails, hang from the school’s ceilings. Students painted the kites and each student and staff member is represented by one of the tree frogs.
