Exclusive Vending Contract

Last Monday (January 22) the board of education approved an exclusive beverage vending contract with Pepsi Bottling Ventures, LLC. Auxiliary Services' mission is to provide quality facilities and support services to ensure safe, healthy, inviting and optimal learning environments. We care about how well students eat. Child Nutrition Services (CNS) takes pride in providing well-balanced meals to help students perform their best, whether in the classroom, participating in after school sports or in any other challenges they face.

Before the exclusive vending contract, high school principals negotiated with various vendors on an individual basis. CNS, as a self-supporting enterprise, has its own vending machines in middle and high schools that contain only non-carbonated beverages, such as 100% juice, fruit drinks, sports drinks, and water. The CNS machines are the only ones that are operational throughout the school day.

Under the exclusive rights contract, middle and high school principals will now have the opportunity to place Pepsi vending machines in their schools if they choose to do so. These machines will contain fruit drinks, juices, sports drinks, and bottled water in addition to soft drinks. Machines containing soft drinks will continue to be turned off during lunch periods, as required by law. As before, CNS will continue filling its machines with non-carbonated beverages; the only difference is that they will all be Pepsi products.

This contract includes changing the vending machines at Rock Quarry, too. Dr. Del Burns, associate superintendent for administrative services, said the contract would probably not affect the use of water jugs.

The school board and superintendent trust our principals to exercise good judgement in deciding the number and placement of vending machines, and whether any signage will be allowed.

According to the school board attorney, schools will not benefit or receive any extra money by putting up more signage, because the contract is at central office level. In other words, the money will come without the signs, so there is not a motive.

Growth in Wake County is not paying for itself. Unfunded needs continue to plague our schools. Although the possible $6.3 million this contract could provide over five years will not address all needs, it will bring much needed dollars into our classrooms.

Safety

Our safety committees are aggressively identifying and addressing safety concerns within the school system. Their mission includes the following: ·
*To improve the total safety awareness of Wake County Public School System employees; ·
*To reduce accidents and injuries by minimizing and eliminating risks; ·
*To reduce medical and insurance costs; ·
*To avoid OSHA citations and penalties; and ·
*To provide the safest working and learning environment possible for all WCPSS employees and students.

Several safety concerns have already been resolved. The warehouse stocks better personal protective equipment (PPE), vehicles have fire extinguishers and first aid kits, and our forklifts now have seat belts. (Seat belts will be added to grounds' equipment as well.)

In regards to excessive speeding at the Rock Quarry complex, the first step has been taken. Associate Superintendent for Auxiliary Services Ray Massey sent a memo to the director of transportation asking him to enforce the speed limit with his bus drivers. In addition, our division will add speed monitors to the complex. If speeding continues to be a problem, speed bumps may be added.

Better cooperation from school administrators was another top concern. Last week at the January principals' meeting, Massey said principals must ensure the safety of maintenance workers when in the schools. "In providing services to the schools, we sometimes cause small inconveniences, but our employees' health and safety must come first."

Massey also told principals of a recent, life-threatening incident in which someone cut a lock off a circuit breaker while one of our employees was working on energized electrical equipment. This act defeated the lockout tag-out procedure designed to protect employees. "We've had several close calls and we will no longer sit idly by as our staff is put in jeopardy. There will be serious consequences," said Massey.

Other concerns from the safety committees include: insufficient welding facility on loading dock, leaking gutters creating icy loading docks, inadequate dust filtration system in the millwork and carpentry shops, the need for better safety shoes and prescription safety glasses.

Some of the concerns have been easy to address; others will take conscious, continued effort and a change of mentality on all our parts.
