EnergySavers Schools Recognized
At its meeting Monday (Nov. 19, 2001), the Wake County Board
of Education recognized students who participated in the Wake
County Public School System EnergySavers program. Jeri Preddy
of WCPSS Organizational Development presented five schools
who were National and State National Energy Education Development
(NEED) Youth Award winners. The award winners included:
WCPSS EnergySavers - Region of the Year - National Level
Green Hope High - Rookie of the Year - NC State Level
Davis Drive Middle - Junior Level Winner - NC State Level
Lockhart Elementary - Elementary Level Finalist - NC State
Level
Knightdale elementary - Honorable Mention - NC State Level
North Ridge Elementary - Honorable Mention - NC State Level
Students from these schools took on individual energy conservation projects that they documented and shared with NEED. AS a result, they were honored on the state and national levels at the NEEDC National Recognition ceremonies held in June in Washington, D.C.
Preddy reported that approximately $60,000 will be awarded as rebates to schools where energy consumption has decreased from the base year by at least ten percent. She said EnergySavers identification and correction of billing errors resulted in an additional saving of $20,491 last year.
Lockhart Elementary students presented board members with light bulbs. Lockhart's Science Club received 700 energy-efficient light bulbs from Energy Star and Lowe's to help educate the school and community about the benefits of energy efficiency. The event is part of the "Change a Light, Change the World" campaign to show how changing just one light bulb or fixture can save money. Energy Star officials say the new light bulbs will save the people of Knightdale nearly $17,500 in energy bills.
