WCPSS Breaks Ground on New Elementary and Community Center

June 26, 2002--Wake County Public School System Superintendent Bill McNeal, Board of Education Chair Kathryn Watson Quigg and board member Patti Head broke ground for Cedar Fork Elementary and a community center, on Wed., June 26, 2002. The new school and community center are a collaborative effort between WCPSS, Wake County Parks and Recreation and the Town of Morrisville.

"I am thankful for the bond money that makes this school possible," said Quigg, referring to the $500 million bond referendum Wake citizens approved in 2000. "It's a rewarding experience to be at a groundbreaking where we are going to make such a difference." The new elementary will help those in the western Wake area by adding approximately 700 new classroom seats.

Neal Conley, Small Kane Architects, presented the site design, floor plan and colors of the school. "All the materials were carefully selected for this project," said Conley. The building is considered "green," taking recycling efforts and other environmental factors into consideration.

Cedar Fork Elementary will serve as swing space for Kingswood Elementary students during the 2003/2004 school year and then open with its own students the following year. The new elementary will have two multi-purpose fields, two softball/ baseball fields, and a community center building complete with a full-size gym, two classrooms, conference room, lounge, and two bathrooms.

"For the people of Morrisville, this is a great step forward," said Morrisville Mayor Gordon Cromwell.

Morrisville will contribute approximately $1.7 million towards the design, full-size gym/community center building, two softball/ baseball fields, and one of the multi-purpose fields. Wake County Parks and Recreation will also provide $250,000 to the town for site work, softball/ baseball fields and one of the multi-purpose fields.

The county plans to build a library on the site in the future.

The groundbreaking is sponsored by the Town of Morrisville.
