Maintenance Issue Bin
Joe Desormeaux, senior director of maintenance, answers your questions

1. What is the status of the M&O reorganization? Training and grade progression continues as planned. M&O expects to add a new function - planning and scheduling - this fall. In addition, we are advertising positions for the central maintenance region, and plan to have it fully staffed early this fiscal year. The central region is the last one; all the others are up and running.

As part of our Maintenance Excellence initiative, we've developed more focus teams to study various aspects of the department. Information from these groups is posted near the mailboxes in the Operations Building. Soon, the focus team leaders will give a mass presentation to all of M&O regarding their findings and progress. Please give team members your ideas - they are here to make things better for you.

2. Why are some craftsmen on the docks? How can they become master craftsmen? Early in the process of developing the reorganization, the directors and supervisors evaluated the working relationship of the regions and core shops. They determined the knowledge, skills and abilities required to maintain our facilities.

For the most part, the maintenance regions are made up of employees cross-trained on a wide range of skills and the core shops at Rock Quarry consist of licensed/specialty employees. The shops at Rock Quarry include HVAC, plumbing, trades (general services), auto repair, communications, buildings and grounds, electrical, and energy management.

Because every position is classified and graded, and current laws do not allow reclassification based on performance and training, to move from craftsman to master craftsman, a position must become vacant.

Designated Smoking Areas

There are several designated smoking areas for Auxiliary Services employees at Rock Quarry Road. These locations are clearly marked with "smoking area" signs and have containers for cigarette disposal. Maps of the permitted smoking areas are posted in each building on the Central Services Complex.

MAXIMO Tip #5

How do I cancel duplicate work orders? Do not complete a duplicate work order - cancel it instead!

If you notice that a work order is a duplication of a previous one, leave the older, original work order as is. Edit the current, duplicate's description by adding "A DUPLICATE OF WORK ORDER # 123456," and then change the status to CANCEL (CAN).

1. If the work order status is WAPPR, DAPPR or APPR, TAB to the DESCRIPTION field and add "A DUPLICATE OF WORK ORDER # 123456." Change the status to CAN (canceled). To do this, go to the Menu Bar (top of the screen) and choose ACTIONS, CHANGE STATUS, CANCEL. The Change Status dialog box opens and you may make a note in the MEMO field. Select the CURRENT RECORD and click OK.

2. If the work order is INPRG, change the work order status to WAPPR (waiting approval). Change the status to UNAPPROVE. To do this, go to the Menu Bar (top of the screen) and choose ACTIONS, CHANGE STATUS, UNAPPROVE. The Change Status dialog box opens and you may make a note in the MEMO field. Select the CURRENT RECORD and click OK. TAB to the DESCRIPTION field and add "A DUPLICATE OF WORK ORDER # 123456." Change the status to CAN (canceled). To do this, go to the Menu Bar (top of the screen) and choose ACTIONS, CHANGE STATUS, CANCEL. The Change Status dialog box opens and you may make a note in the MEMO field. Select the CURRENT RECORD and click OK.
