A Beloved Leader and Friend
"I've done very little, but we've done a lot," said Ray Massey, Jr., associate superintendent for auxiliary services. This from a man who oversaw the construction of more than 50 schools and 120 major renovation projects funded by more than $1.2 billion of school bond referendums, initiated energy conservation efforts, renewed the focus on safety, managed annual budgets of over $250 million, and touched countless lives along the way.

His comment reflects his selfless, humble nature and his propensity to graciously step aside and let others accept praise. Now, after close to 30 years of service, Massey is retiring.

Thank You
With winter weather procedures already in hand, WCPSS maintenance employees worked through the weekend to ensure schools would be safe, warm and accessible for students and staff after last Wednesday's ice storm. Because of their efforts, all but two schools opened Monday morning with only a two-hour delay. By Tuesday, all WCPSS schools opened on their regular schedules.

WCPSS maintenance employees and contractors were on standby Wednesday afternoon as weather alerts began calling for ice to accumulate on trees, power lines and roads. By 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, employees were already checking on schools. Staff worked from early in the morning to late at night to clear ice, fallen trees and other debris from school entrances, bus and parent drop off lanes and parking lots.

Thank you for an outstanding job.

Auxiliary Services Holiday Banquet
The Auxiliary Services Holiday Banquet will be held on Wednesday, December 18, from 11:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., in the M&O Transportation Shop. Barbecue pork, chicken and shrimp will be provided. Please bring your favorite side dish with serving utensils, dessert or soda. Sweet and unsweetened tea and breads will be provided.

Door prizes will be given, along with a final farewell to Ray Massey, Jr.

Congratulations
Frank Koontz, director of environmental health and safety, was appointed to the State Employees' Credit Union's East Raleigh Advisory Board this month. His term will last until Dec. 31, 2004. Koontz hopes his involvement will benefit school system employees.
