MAXIMO Tip #1
About 4,000 Wake County Public School System employees will see a difference in their April 2002 paychecks. Their checks will reflect the revised salary schedules - retroactive to July or the beginning of the school year, depending on the employee's position.
On Apr. 2, WCPSS will send individual letters to employees stating their job title and new salary schedule. Letters to employees, budget managers and principals - mailed Feb. 25 - explained the revisions.
"This is strictly a beneficial move - no one took a pay cut," said David Howell, senior director of salary administration and central support staffing. If moving someone to a new schedule would have resulted in a pay cut, then he was moved up to the low end of the next scale (without a raise, or possibly a small one).
Based on the Arthur Andersen Compensation Study (completed Jan. 2000), WCPSS added $4 million into payroll for non-certified employees and consolidated the number of salary schedules by about 50%. In general, employees with more years of service received higher increases than those with less time in.
Two years ago, the district allocated $2 million to address the salaries of low-paid employees with few years of service.
The next step is to evaluate more than years of service with just the school system and state when determining placement on the salary schedule. "In the next few months we'll work out those details. But, we've taken the first step," said Howell.

Four of the top 10 finalists for the March Employee Excellence Award are members of the Auxiliary Services Division. Congratulations to Clayton Johnson, custodial supervisor at Green Hope High; Sixto Rodriquez, custodian at Bugg Elementary; Sandra Shearin, CNS assistant manager at Athens Drive High; and Margaret Wimbush, assistant manager/cashier at Jeffreys Grove Elementary.
Finalists will be recognized for their outstanding service at the Tues., Apr. 16, board of education meeting. Each month 10 school system employees will be recognized, based on nominations.
Other finalists for the month of March include: Barbara Burns, assistant principal at Jones Dairy Elementary; Jill Cottengim, teacher at Garner High; Kim Fendick, graphic designer at the Print Shop; Susan Lassiter, bus driver for Garner High; and Billie Watson, SIMS data manager at Stough Elementary.
At the Mar. 19 board of education meeting, Mike Burriss, assistant superintendent for facilities, recognized two award-winning groups for their work on recent school projects.
Engineering Firm Wins Award for Carroll Middle's Roof
Replacement
The American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina
presented an Honors Award, Jan. 15, to Law Engineering & Environmental
Services, Inc. in recognition of engineering excellence in
the roof replacement design and implementation at Carroll
Middle.
Principal Scientist Lane Gallo and Project Manager Kelly Wilcox accepted the award for Law Engineering.
Burriss presented a similar plaque to Carroll Middle Assistant Principal Tom Filer, Mar. 19, because his skill in coordinating school staff, students and contractors made the project a success. Greg Clark, project manager for Carroll, was also instrumental in the roof replacement.
Landscaper Wins Site Development and Landscape Design
Award for Yates Mill Elementary
The American Society of Landscape Architects, North Carolina
Chapter, presented an Honor Award to CLH Design, PA for outstanding
professional achievement in the site development and landscape
design at Yates Mill Elementary.
Burriss commended those involved in the Yates Mill Elementary project. He recognized CLH project consultant Christine Hilt, Architect Donna Francis, Principal Lynn Williams, Facility Planner Sheri Green, and Project Manager Gerald Core.
Marsha Brande started with the facilities department, Mar. 11, as an accounting technician. Before coming to the school system, she was a bookkeeper at Bell's Carpet for 18 years. Brande may be reached at 856-2978.
Facilities also hired three new project managers. Fred Forthofer was previously the fire alarm technician for Simplex Grinnell. He may be reached at 508-9045. Bruce Hyder, also a project manager, came to the school system from Mayville Metal Products where he was an engineering manager. Hyder's office phone number is 856-2974. Warren Jones may be reached at 856-8247. Jones was previously the project, site and safety manager at Southern Industrial Constructors.
Greg Scott accepted the position of plumbing foreman in the Energy & Physical Plant Department, effective Apr. 1. Scott has worked for WCPSS for 17 years and has served as the plumbing shop lead person for the last year.
CNS Holds Annual Employee Information Conference
Approximately 80 Child Nutrition Services employees, managers, and supervisors attended an employee information conference at Carroll Middle. Dr. Joe Parry-Hill, Jr., NC Department of Public Instruction School Personnel Support Section, was the keynote speaker. Parry-Hill explained the 32 different benefits available to full-time staff and those that apply to part-time employees. He answered numerous questions about retirement, state health plan, vacation and sick leave, longevity, and the Family Medical Leave Act. Parry-Hill encouraged everyone to investigate buying back NC years of service since the legislature changed the fee.
CNS employees were able to talk one-on-one with representatives from other groups as well. Those agencies represented included: REAP, SECU, WCPSS Staff Development, WCPSS Organizational Development, CNS Staff Development, NC School Food Service Association, and the Department of Defense Produce Procurement Agency. To view conference photos, visit http://www.wcpss.net/child-nutrition/info_fair.
The school board and the Facilities Department are in the beginning stages of developing the next building program - PLAN 2004. At the Tues., Apr. 2 facilities committee meeting, the board will discuss the overall planning process.
In mid-March, facilities asked all principals to work with their PTAs, staff and other stakeholders to develop and submit a list of school needs by May. The department is also preparing a survey, which should be complete by the end of the month, to gather input from municipalities and special interest groups.
In addition, an outside company will complete an extensive facilities assessment - including equipment inventory and conditions assessments - by August. This information will help the school system better coordinate maintenance job plans with facilities' capital projects.
Safety Minute - Extension Cords
All electrical cords used within our facilities must have a ground lead. In other words, an extension cord must be three-prong and plug into a three-prong plug.
Do not plug extension cords into one another. Circuits may overload and cause a fire. (This could happen at night when no one is on site.)
Extension cords come in various lengths - get the right one. Do not run extension cords under carpet; a short in the cord can lead to a fire.
Do not leave extension cords wound up in a knot. If the length is too long, the cord can overheat and catch on fire.
Please forward suggestions for safety minutes to Doug Burd (dburd@wcpss.net).
