Impact if Approved by the Board of Education

Approximately 103 students in node 524.3 will be reassigned from Penny Road to Davis Drive Elementary. Approximately 37 students from nodes 417.3 and 424.7 will be reassigned rom Penny Road to Oak Grove Elementary.

Reasons for Staff Recommendations

Capacity: Penny Road will continue to operate with nine mobile/modular classrooms.

Crowding: The school is currently overcrowded because of the temporary placement of about 69 students whose parents did not consent to assignment to a year-round school. If the Court of Appeals supports the Board of Education's right to assign students to year-round schools, staff will recommend that those students attend their base year-round assignment. If the Court of Appeals does not intervene, the Growth and Planning Department will make further recommendations regarding traditional calendar assignments for 2008-09 later this spring.

Healthy Schools: Changes approved will reduce the percentage of students from low-income families from 27% to 20%, but the school will be comparable to other nearby schools.

Long Range Planning: Future schools opening in 2009, 2010, and 2011 are not expected to significantly impact the attendance area of this school.
