Impact if Approved by the Board of Education

Approximately 96 students from nodes 585.1 and 706.0, which are located adjacent to Heritage Elementary, will be reassigned from Forest Pines to Heritage. Approximately 106 students from nodes 585.2 and 585.3 will be reassigned from Wake Forest Elementary. This will consolidate and expand the base area immediately around Heritage Elementary and raise enrollment to fill the school.

Reasons for Staff Recommendations

Capacity: No change is planned for the twelve mobile units at Heritage. Current enrollment is significantly below capacity.

Crowding: Crowding was not a concern at this school in the development of these recommendations. In calculating growth, the projection software applies the same growth factor to the year-round application students as it does to the students in base nodes. Since these are application students in a node and not base students, the impact of either losing or gaining students may not be as large as indicated.

Healthy Schools: The percentage of students from low-income students will fall slightly from 24% to 20% but remain comparable to neighboring schools.

Long Range Planning: Staff believes this reassignment will better utilize the year-round capacity at Heritage through base assignments since other year-round schools have been created near Heritage and reduced applications to the school. The opening of E25 Elementary in 2010-11 will probably impact the assignment area for this school.
