Impact if Approved by the Board of Education

Approximately 96 students from nodes 585.1 and 706.0, which are located adjacent to Heritage Elementary, will be reassigned from Forest Pines to Heritage. (Additional reductions in the base area from nodes 305.0 and 715.0 were removed after consideration of the draft proposal because those nodes are likely to be reassigned when E25 Elementary opens in 2010.) If high growth continues in the Forest Pines base, overcrowding will be a significant problem and The Board decided that the Board of Education cap enrollment at the school at 770 students and designate Wake Forest Elementary as the overflow school until E25 opens. Staff also recommends that the year-round application school for the Forest Pines base be designated as North Forest Pines in an effort to direct some of the Forest Pines growth into the year-round school located at the same site.

Base Nodes Out:

Reasons for Staff Recommendations

Capacity:  No mobile units can be placed at Forest Pines.

Crowding:  Enrollment from the base area has risen rapidly since the school moved from its temporary facility to its permanent facility. The base area needs to be reduced.

Healthy Schools:  The demographic mix of students was not a concern at this school in the development of these recommendations

Long Range Planning:  Changes in the base area of the school will reduce the base area while making node assignments more consistent with neighboring nodes. The opening of E25 Elementary in 2010-11 will impact the assignment area for this school.
