Impact if Approved by the Board of Education

Approximately 212 students from nodes 136.0 and 419.2 will be reassigned from Combs to Dillard Elementary in order to expand the Dillard Elementary base and replace students Dillard will lose to the new Laurel Park Elementary. Approximately 100 additional magnet spaces at Combs will be created.

Reasons for Staff Recommendations

Capacity:  No change is planned for the thirteen mobile units at Combs.

Crowding:  Staff is seeking to reduce overcrowding at Combs and make more magnet seats available to applicants through a reduction in the school's base assignments. In calculating growth, the projection software applies the same growth factor to the magnet application students as it does to the students in base nodes. Since these are application students in a node and not base students, the impact of either losing or gaining students may not be as large as indicated.

Healthy Schools:  Providing more space for magnet program applicants at Combs will help maintain the percentage of students from low-income families at levels similar to other magnet schools.

Long Range Planning:  Combs is a magnet school with a large base. The changes suggested by staff and approved by the Board of Education will provide more access to the magnet program for applicants by reducing the base area of the school.
