Impact if Approved by the Board of Education
Approximately 155 year-round application students will be assigned to the new Sycamore Creek Elementary because they reside in the base area recommended for the new school. Approximately 95 students from the current Brier Creek base area that live east of Highway 70 in nodes 318.1, 318.3, and 655.0 will be reassigned to Leesville Elementary. Because those nodes were reassigned within the past three years, grandfathering of requests for transfers to stay at Brier Creek will be extended to third-grade. Approximately 131 students from nodes 017.2 and 017.3 will be reassigned from Hilburn to Brier Creek.

Reasons for Staff Recommendations
Capacity: The addition of six modular classrooms is proposed for Brier Creek.
Crowding: Crowding can be avoided by increasing the school's capacity and decreasing both the application area and the base area for the school. In calculating growth, the projection software applies the same growth factor to the year-round application students as it does to the students in base nodes. Since these are application students in a node and not base students, the impact of either losing or gaining students may not be as large as indicated.
Healthy Schools: The assignment of two nodes with high percentages of low-income families will raise the percentage of students from low-income families from 9% to 25%.
Long Range Planning: The opening of Alston Ridge Elementary in 2009-10 will probably impact the assignment area for this school.
