Building Program

The quality of public schools has attracted thousands of new families to Wake County. To keep up with rapid enrollment growth, the system is building new schools and expanding existing schools

In 2000-2001, voters approved by 3-to-1 a bond referendum that will fund a new building program called PLAN 2000. In the 25 years of existence, WCPSS has built 48 schools, two-thirds of the number that were in place when the school system was created!

PLAN 2000 is an ambitious plan to meet the tremendous needs facing our system - a system that will house over 112,000 students by the end of 2004. With Wake County voters' approval in a November 2000 referendum of $500 million in school bonds and $50 million in pay-as-you-go funds, WCPSS will build 14 new schools and renovate or expand 96 existing schools. By eliminating 100 mobile units, 91% of students will be in permanent classroom seats.

With renovations underway at the Athens Drive High campus, the school has moved to the Middle Creek High campus for the 2001-2002 school year. Once renovations are completed, Athens Drive will return to its updated campus and the new Middle Creek High will open in the fall of 2002-2003.
