Students from Centennial Campus Magnet Middle School collaborated with students from Beijing on a variety of projects at the Friday Institute on Feb. 6. Centennial Middle magnet coordinator Elwood Peters and the Centennial student leadership team worked with Beijing Royal School students on video journaling and geomapping. Centennial Middle ESL teacher Cindy Linton and the Centennial Videography Society collaborated with the Beijing students on a Marshmallow Design Challenge to build the tallest possible structure using only tape, spaghetti and string. The structure had to be free standing and balance a marshmallow on top. Several groups successfully completed freestanding structures; the tallest was more than 21 inches. Students enjoyed meeting new friends from another culture and sharing experiences.
“The best part of the experience was getting to know the Chinese students and learn a little about their culture,” said Centennial student Emily Gonzalez.
Thanks to teacher Cindy Linton for sharing this story.
