Five WCPSS Employees Honored with Employee Excellence Awards

Five Wake County Public School System employees were recognized by the Board of Education with Employee Excellence Awards on March 15.

The school system’s Employee Excellence Awards were presented to Vickie Kelly of the Accounting Department, Kathy Nelson of Heritage Middle, Angela Tall of Salem Middle, Randy Dishong of WCPSS Security and Kendrick Scott of WCPSS Security.

The Employee Excellence Awards were created to recognize Wake County school employees for their hard work, and providing one of the country’s top-performing school districts. Employees are nominated for the honor and selected by a committee.

Superintendent Tony Tata presented the employees to the board. Tata awarded the employees a plaque and his congratulations as Assistant Superintendent Stephen Gainey described the employee’s achievements.

Honored were Randy Dishong, Kathy Nelson, Vickie Kelly, Kendrick Scott and Angela Tall.

Following is a brief description of the Employee Excellence Award winners:

Vickie Kelly, the Accountant for Fund 5-CNS in the WCPSS Accounting Department, negotiated analysis charges and credit rates with BB&T to save the Child Nutrition Services budget approximately $2,200 per year.  This is one example of her constant efforts to protect CNS funds.   In addition, she provides excellent customer service whether talking to a parent about a returned check or talking to a vendor about discrepancies on invoices.

Kathy Nelson, a Math Teacher at Heritage Middle School,  is a progressive educator.  She not only embraces new challenges, but tirelessly studies educational literature on her own, and shares her forward thinking experiences with others.  Thanks to her willingness to step outside the conventions of instruction, her students become successful as measured by EOGs and in ways that traditional assessments will never measure.

Angela Tall, the Cafeteria Manager  at Salem Middle School, has changed the dynamics of Salem Middle School’s cafeteria by providing a welcoming place that students like to visit.  She is a dependable, hardworking person who gives her best every day.  Tall has become a mentor and role model for many of the economically disadvantaged students at Salem Middle School.  Also, she has made a difference in the overall school environment.

Randy Dishong, a Security Investigator with the WCPSS Security Department, provides security support to 25 schools.  His creative innovations include a database for investigators to report information and track security trends as well as a computerized trend-analysis program used to detect costly recurrent alarms.  In addition, he recently hosted a full-scale, multi-agency response exercise at the Dillard Drive campuses to prepare the school system to manage a school-related catastrophic event.

Kendrick Scott, a Security Investigator with the WCPSS Security Department, routinely receives commendations from the administrators of the schools that he serves.  One example of his great work was when he helped administrators at a particular school locate a student who did not arrive home after school.  Scott communicated with the student’s parents while searching the school and the neighborhoods to look for the student.  He did not stop until the student was located.  Scott is enthusiastic, and that is reflected in the quality of service he provides on behalf of the Security Department.
