As part of our ongoing International Festival at Laurel Park, students will be working with Susan Petrie, a professional drum circle facilitator, on Wednesday, March 17. Students will be learning complementary drum parts to accompany the song Ku-Ku from Guinea, West Coast Africa. Susan has studied with Mamady Keita, a master djembe drummer from Balandugu (Guinea). Susan also works with the local performance group Rhythmicity.
In celebration of our International Festival, the entire Specialist Team members at Laurel Park including Music, Art, Spanish, P.E., Media, and Technology teachers have been presenting on the cultural aspects of various countries including Cuba, Israel, China, Italy, Germany, and Canada. Over the past several months, students in grades K-5 have acquired unique exposure to the cultures during their grade-level “Penguin Pride” days. Cultural aspects studied include literature, dance, visual art, language, and music. In order to enhance the learning opportunities provided, specialists collaborated with Laurel Park parents/guardians who graciously shared their authentic experiences and artifacts with the students as well.
