Advocating for Your Child

Parents of children with special needs may find a new Lifelong Learning class helpful in teaching them how to effectively partner with schools while getting involved in their child’s special education planning.

The course is called Five R’s of Advocating for Your Child with Disabilities and it will be offered as an 8-week course beginning January 21.The course is intended to prepare parents (those whose children may or may not yet be receiving special education services) for navigating an often challenging and confusing special education system and provides useful tools for collaborating on IEP team strategies and action plans.

“The 5 R’s course will help forge respectful, supportive, and mutually beneficial relationships between school staff, administrators, and education professionals to provide students the greatest benefit towards meeting their educational needs,” said Instructor Cynthia Daniels-Hall.

Students will meet every Thursday from 6:30-9:00 p.m. at Reedy Creek Middle School, January 21 – March 11. The cost is $135 and can be paid in-person at the start of the class or by mail. To secure a spot, register online by visiting the Lifelong Learning Website. For more information or to register, contact Natasha Baldwin-Garcia at 919-850-1830 or email lifelonglearning@wcpss.net.
