Willow Springs Teacher Megan Lewis has worked with the help of her school and community to provide a space for students to learn lessons from gardening.
With the help of educators, farmers and children, Lewis has built the Growing Zone. It is an outdoor lab for Lewis to teach lessons from the NC Standard Course of Study about biology and nutrition and help students develop an interest in fresh produce.
Lewis has developed a companion website for the garden where she records the students’ work, shows the important lessons they’re learning, addresses gardening questions parents are asking and identifies resources for educators interested in school gardens.
