The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) offers 7 state championships in the fall sports season. WCPSS won 4 state championships, finished 2nd in one, and in the top 4 in the other two sports offered by the NCHSAA. The NCHSAA also offers an Invitational Cheerleading State Championship with several divisions. WCPSS high schools won 3 of the divisions and the top overall award.
WCPSS Athletic Director Bobby Guthrie compiled the following report on student athletes:
Girls’ Tennis
-Broughton won the state championship. David Rose is the coach.
-Green Hope finished in the top 8 in the state losing to Broughton in the quarter-finals.
Girls’ Cross Country
-Green Hope won the state championship. Mike Miragliuolo is the coach.
-Millbrook finished 12th in the state.
Girls’ Golf
-Athens Drive won the state championship for the 2nd year in a row. Tony Alcon is the coach.
-Wake Forest-Rolesville finished 6th, Wakefield 9th, Broughton 12th, and Green Hope 14th.
Boys’ Cross Country
-Sanderson won the state championship. Ashley Taylor is the coach.
-Broughton finished 2nd, Green Hope finished 6th, and Apex 11th in the state.
Volleyball
-Enloe finished in the top 4 in the state losing to the eventual state champion Greenville Rose in the state semi-finals.
-Wakefield finished in the top 8 in the state losing in the quarter-finals.
-Broughton and Wake Forest-Rolesville finished in the top 16 in the state.
Boys’ Soccer
-Green Hope finished 2nd in the state championship.
-Millbrook – Finished in the top 8 in the state losing to Green Hope in the quarter-finals.
-Broughton finished in the top 16 in the state.
Football
-Wake Forest-Rolesville – finished in the top 4 in the state 4AA losing in the semi-finals.
-Fuquay-Varina – finished in the top 8 in the state 4AA losing in the quarter-finals to Wake Forest-Rolesville.
-Middle Creek – finished in the top 8 in the state 4A losing in the quarter-finals.
-Fourteen WCPSS high schools earned berths in the football playoffs.
Varsity Cheerleading
-Millbrook won the top honor, the Carolina Cup at the NCHSAA Cheerleading Invitational. They also won the state championship in the Super Large Varsity division. The coach is Kathryn Hayes.
-Broughton won the Super Varsity Division State Championship at the NCHSAA Cheerleading Invitational. The coach is Marge Elvers.
-Leesville won the Medium Varsity Division State Championship at the NCHSAA Cheerleading Invitational. The coach is Shelly Reathaford.
NCHSAA High School Sportsmanship Awards (Number of Years Consecutively)
-East Wake, Enloe (4th), Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs were presented a plaque honoring Ejection Free years by the NCHSAA at their Region 3 meeting.
Middle School Fall Sportsmanship Awards
-Davis Drive, West Cary, Apex, and West Lake (Southern Conference); Daniels, Dillard, and Martin (Central Conference); and Zebulon, Heritage, Leesville and West Millbrook (Northern Conference) were fall sports season sportsmanship award winners. These schools will display Sportsmanship Banners during the winter sports season.
Other Awards
-Vickie Peoples (former Enloe HS Swim Coach) will be inducted into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in the spring 2010.
-Daniel Finn (Southeast Raleigh HS Head Football Coach) was named “High School Coach of the Week” for the week of November 19th by the Carolina Panthers.
-Del Phillips (Apex HS Athletic Director) and Todd Schuler (Panther Creek HS Athletic Director) have completed the certification process to become recognized as a Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrator’s Association (NIAAA). This certification is based on years of experience, completion of required Leadership Training Courses, and successful completion of the CAA Leadership Training Test.
