Davis Drive Middle School joins a number of other schools that will mark Oct. 19-23 as Red Ribbon Week.
This is the 23 anniversary of the first Red Ribbon Week. It is a week that honors the memory of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, an undercover U.S. Drug Enforcement Officer who was killed in the line of duty in Mexico in 1985. Red Ribbon Week began the following year in his hometown in California, organized by family and friends who wore red ribbons in Kiki's honor. In 1988, Congress proclaimed the last full week in October as National Red Ribbon Week. National observance of Red Ribbon Week has grown to more than 100,000 schools.
In marking Red Ribbon Week, Davis Drive Middle is among thousands of schools pledging to be drug free in America. The school has established daily activities and students will take part in the Town Of Cary Red Ribbon Week Poster Contest.
