Ligon Student Takes Third Place in Geography Bee

Shantan Krovvidi, 13, a seventh-grader at Ligon Middle School in Raleigh took third place at the 2009 National Geographic Bee held in Washington, D.C., on May 20. He won a $10,000 college scholarship.
Eric Yang, a seventh-grader from Texas, took top honors. He won a $25,000 college scholarship, lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and a trip to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic Bee moderator and "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek. Second-place winner and recipient of a $15,000 college scholarship was Oregon's Arjun Kandaswamy, an eighth-grader.
The winning question was: Timis County shares its name with a tributary of the Danube and is located in the western part of which European country? Answer: Romania.
Fifty-five state and territory winners took part in the preliminary rounds of the 2009 National Geographic Bee on Tuesday, May 19. The top 10 contestants met in the final round. Nearly 5 million students take part in the National Geographic Bee each year.
Krovvidi has won a number of piano and swimming awards and has a 2nd-degree black belt in tae kwon do. He hopes to be a doctor working for Doctors Without Borders when he's older. He enjoys archery and playing badminton.
