Our Evaluation and Research Department recently completed a study of effective practices among WCPSS U.S. History teachers. Here's a quick summary:
Effective U.S. History teachers had strong content knowledge, prepared their own materials, taught reading and note-taking skills, used time wisely and connected history to themes across time.
Relationships with students were of utmost importance. Effective teachers gave frequent positive feedback, believed that all students could succeed and created an atmosphere of mutual respect.
Of course, there's more detail in the full report (PDF). You can also find more reports from our Evaluation and Research team posted to their departmental website by topic and date.
