At the International Baccalaureate high schools in the Wake County Public School System, students are involved in community service. Community service has been a requirement for students at Broughton High for years.
Hillary Pollan is a Broughton High senior in the IB program who is very active in community service. Myra Smith, Broughton High's Middle Years Programme IB coordinator, explains the impact of community service involvement on students.
Susan Schmidt, the WCPSS Character Education coordinator, sees Hillary's work in the community as an important part of character building instruction.
