Every day, hundreds of exciting opportunities for Wake County School students take place because members of our community care enough to get involved and volunteer in our schools. School volunteers are people just like you -- community members, parents, grandparents, students, business people and retirees -- who have discovered that spending time and sharing talents with students is an energizing and worthwhile experience.
Once thought to be the province of parents, our schools are eager to involve the entire community in support of education. Volunteers perform a wide variety of tasks in our schools from helping answer phones in the front office, to tutoring children and serving as chaperones on field trips.
Being a school volunteer doesn't require any special skills -- just sharing your time with a student or assisting a teacher can make a real difference.
A few years ago, the Wake County Public School System implemented a new volunteer screening system that makes it easier for schools to match volunteers to their interests while ensuring the safety of our students. Now, registering to become a school volunteer is as simple as filling out a short, computer-based questionnaire at any of our schools or in the system's customer service center. The questionnaire is available in both English and Spanish.
During the registration process, volunteers are asked to provide basic information and get the opportunity to choose the types of volunteer activities that they are interested in. Volunteer activities are divided into four levels, based on the amount of student contact involved. Level three and four activities involve direct contact with students under limited or no supervision. Individuals interested in volunteering for these activities must submit information during the registration process that will be used to perform a criminal background check.
Volunteers are now able to keep track of the number of hours they spend volunteering by logging in their hours online.
More than 800 new volunteers registered so far this month, but more volunteers are always needed. If you think you'd be interested in becoming a school volunteer you can get more information by contacting your local school, calling Toni Cooper, Coordinator of Family Involvement & Outreach Services at 858-3239 or by visiting our website.
