WCPSS Students Win National Achievement Scholarships

Four Wake County Public School System students were among the 700 across the country who earned National Achievement Scholarships in 2007.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privately financed academic competition established in 1964 to honor scholastically talented Black American youth. Funding for the awards is provided by more than 50 corporate organizations and professional associations, and by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a non-profit organization which awards its scholarships on the basis of merit and achievement.

WCPSS students earning National Achievement Scholarships worth $2,500 include:

  • Aneitra D. Hoggard of Garner, who attends Enloe High and intends to pursue a career in medicine,
  • Robert A. Spivey of Garner, who attends Garner High and intends to pursue a career in civil engineering,
  • Breanna S. Freeman of Raleigh, who attends Wakefield High and intends to pursue a career in foreign languages/science, and
  • Dnae C. Henderson of Raleigh, who attends Millbrook High and intends to pursue a career in education (history professor)/human rights activism.

National Achievement Scholarships are awarded to finalists judged to have the strongest record of accomplishments and greatest potential for academic success in college. Candidates were judged based on high performance on the 2005 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, a record of consistently high academic performance, endorsements by an official of their high schools, high SAT performance, and a personal essay.
