Students will be asked to pause for a moment of silence today at Green Hope High School and other WCPSS schools taking part in the moment of silence Gov. Mike Easley has requested to remember the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings.
Dr. Jim Hedrick, Green Hope's principal, earned his doctorate at Virginia Tech. He said other Green Hope staff also graduated from Virginia Tech, as well as parents of several students.
On Tuesday, at the end of first period, Hedrick made the following announcement:
As many of you are aware, yesterday at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia there was a tragic shooting in which 32 students and staff were killed. Certainly our thoughts and our concerns go out to their families, their friends, and their colleagues who are left to deal with the aftermath of this senseless and heinous act...
As a graduate of Virginia Tech, I am especially bothered by this incident. I would have never imagined it happening there. However, it is important for us to remember that none of us are far from violence. With this in mind, I challenge each of us to renew our efforts to practice the "law of love" in which we as a people who live in a great society care for one another; look out for one another; and do our best never to cause others irreparable harm or injury.
In memory of yesterday's tragic event in Blacksburg, Virginia...let's pause for a moment to remember the victims and their families and friends...
At school today, a number of Green Hope students and staff are wearing orange and maroon in support of the Hokie nation.
Across the school system, principals have been encouraged to pause for a minute of silence at noon today as requested by Gov. Mike Easley. Friday, April 20 has been declared a day of mourning in North Carolina in memory of the victims of the Virginia Tech shooting.
Easley has asked all North Carolinians, as an expression of solidarity and respect, to observe a minute of silence at noon to honor those who were killed and injured during this week's tragedy.
"We mourn for the losses suffered by our neighbors in Virginia, share in their sorrow and offer our support," said Easley. "While it will take time for the wounds from this tragedy to heal, we are confident in the resilience of the university community and thankful for the outpouring of support for the injured and the families of those who lost loved ones."
