PTA Reflections Showcases Student Art Talent

The Wake County PTA Council is taking part in the National PTA Reflections Arts program. The PTA believes all children deserve a quality arts education and encourages students to pursue artistic expression through participation in its annual arts Reflections Program.

Students in preschool through grade 12 are encouraged to create and submit works of art in six areas: literature, musical composition, photography, dance choreography, film/video production, and the visual arts (which include art forms such as drawing, painting, print making, and collage).

Each year, the Reflections Program challenges students to create art that supports a specific theme. Themes are selected from thousands of ideas submitted by students to the National PTA's Reflections Program Theme Search. This year's theme is "My favorite place…"

Students participate in the Reflections Program by submitting entries at their school to their local PTA or PTSA. Students may enter as many arts areas as they would like and as many entries as they desire as long as they have a completed official entry form for each art work they enter into the program. Students are judged based on their grade divisions:

· Primary (preschool-grade 2)
· Intermediate (grades 3-5)
· Middle/Junior (grades 6-8)
· Senior (grades 9-12)

In Wake County the judging process begins with each local school holding their own Reflections program and advancing 12 entries per age division to the Wake County Council Reflections Program.

At the WCPTA Council level, student entries submitted from WCPSS schools will be judged based on the arts areas and winners will be determined by experts in each area of their field. All Council-level winners will be honored at the WCPTA Reflections Reception and Ceremony on March 22, 2007.

The WCPTA Council is only allowed to advance 20 entries total to the district level of the Reflections Program. The district level has the entries from all of the counties in our district judged and then advances the winners to the state level of the Reflections Program. Once entries reach the state level, the state PTA may select entries to submit to the National PTA. Awards of Excellence and Awards of Merit are recognized at the annual National PTA Convention and are displayed as a part of the program's traveling exhibit.

This year local school units may submit 12 entries per grade division to the Wake County PTA Council level of Reflections Program on January 9th, 2007. The drop off location will be the NC PTA Office on Glenwood Avenue from 9:00 am until 5:00pm. Local school PTA representatives should make sure all entries are in portfolios for each grade division and all paperwork required for advancement of entries is included. Any questions should be directed to Melissa Schmidt, Wake County PTA Reflections Chair, at Mschmidt45@nc.rr.com.
