The Wake County Public School System is offering several summer school programs for students wishing to repeat classes or receive additional instruction. Programs are optional and include web-based instruction at the high schools, Early Start programs for students entering kindergarten, and additional programs for elementary school students showing academic need.
Each high school will offer individualized instruction for students -- for repeat credit only -- using the web-based NovaNET lab on campus. The school principal will decide which traditional classes to hold based on the needs of his or her students.
Traditional high schools will hold NovaNET classes from July 5-August 3; Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School is holding classes from June 12-July 14. Registration at students' base school closes June 21. If there are still openings, a central registration for current WCPSS students will be held in Athens Drive High School's cafeteria at 9 a.m. on June 23. Registration for all others will begin at 1 p.m. for any remaining seats.
In addition, beginning the week of July 10, some Wake County elementary schools will offer an Early Start program to help students transition to kindergarten. Schools invite students with the highest needs to participate in the four-week, Title I program that focuses on literacy and social skills. There was an application process in the spring.
Many Title I schools are also offering a summer school program for elementary school students who need help in reading or math. The program runs from July 10 through the first week in August, and mainly serves rising third-, fourth- and fifth-graders. Teachers invite students to participate. Check your school for details.
