Cutting Back on the Clutter: Distribution of Publications by Nonstudents

Fliers. Publications. Handouts. There have been a lot of them coming home after school in recent years, so many that we've been receiving complaints from parents, students and staff alike. In response, the Wake County Board of Education revised Board Policy 2420, "Distribution of Publications by Nonstudents," last December. The policy sharply curtails the distribution of publications "during the school day or at school activities if the materials are unrelated to instruction or a school-sponsored activity."

Students can still receive information about events or activities primarily for school-age students or that substantially support the school program. Government agencies, PTAs and booster clubs, higher education institutions, school/business partnerships and similar organizations must get permission of the school principal for display or distribution. Other entities that want to display items related to educational services, community activities, leadership/character education activities and licensed day care services need to obtain the approval of the Public Information Office (Communications Department) by calling Anne Gallagher at 850-3017.
