At today's meeting of the Wake County Board of Education, board chair Patti Head invited deputy superintendent Dr. Del Burns to the podium, and gave him an opportunity to briefly describe his vision for the future of the Wake County Public School System. Dr. Burns will succeed Bill McNeal as superintendent on July 1 (pending contract negotiations with the school board). Here's a transcript of his remarks:
Thank you, Mrs. Head and members of the Board, for allowing me the opportunity to serve as superintendent of the Wake County Public School System. Serving over 120,000 students, 16,000 employees and you as superintendent, in one of the finest school systems in our country, is indeed both an honor and a privilege.
It is a fact that we have many challenges, changes and choices ahead, and I must say that I look forward to facing them together with you as we build upon the strong foundation that has been built by my friend and colleague, Bill McNeal, and others.
I have had folks ask about my vision for the future. I would like to briefly share a few goals, which I view as frames for the pictures we will paint in the months and years to come.
As superintendent, my goals for the Wake County Public School System will include:
- A rededication and focus on our core business of teaching and learning.
- Retention, recruitment and training of high quality employees.
- Development and implementation of systems and organizational structures to support schools, ensure accountability, and engage the community.
- Expansion of the focus upon fiscal accountability, including hiring a Chief Business Officer to oversee finance and human relations departments within the Wake County Public School System.
That's enough for now, certainly more to come later.
Thank you again for your confidence and support. Please know that I will work as hard as I can on your behalf for every student in the Wake County Public School System.
Thank you.
