Four More Year-Round Schools

Last night, the Wake County Board of Education authorized the opening of four new elementary schools in the 2006-07 school year as year-round programs. They will join the upcoming year-round Carpenter Elementary (currently serving as an interim ninth-grade center) in providing additional space for our rapidly increasing student population.

The board's decision established Barwell Road Elementary and Brier Creek Elementary, both scheduled to open in permanent facilities next year, as year-round programs. In addition, two more elementary schools will be opening early in temporary facilities, in the same way that the Harris Creek, Forest Pines Drive and Wakelon elementaries opened this year before their permanent campuses were built. One of the new elementary schools (designated E12 or E19 by our Facilities Department) will occupy the modular school on Spring Forest Road used this year by Harris Creek. The other elementary school (E18) will share space with the new Holly Springs High School. Because we open high schools with ninth and tenth-grade students in the first year, we will be able to use the additional space while E18 is being built.

This -- along with another 100 mobile units added to our campuses -- is part of a short-term solution to our crowding concerns. Other short-term solutions, and our long-term plans for school construction, will be discussed at our second round of Community Engagement Meetings across the county, from October 24 to November 3. We'll also cover the timing of future school openings and possible student reassignment to fill those new schools, and address feedback from the first round of meetings. We'll be sharing a lot of important information about the impact of growth in your area. Please join us!
