When WCPSS Maintenance and Operations employees Jim and Jackie Pedersen "felt led to go 'down South'" and deliver supplies to victims of Hurricane Katrina last week, they casually mentioned to their colleagues that they would be glad to take along any other contributions. Little did they realize....
That very afternoon they had received 13 cases of bottled water. By the time they left last Tuesday, WCPSS employees from Facilities and Maintenance and Operations (General Services, Buildings and Grounds, Energy and Physical Plant, and office staff) had completely filled their truck with water, clothes, diapers and baby bottles.
The Pedersens traveled as far as Aniston, Alabama, before they were told that it probably wouldn't be a good idea to head further south. Undaunted, they made connections with a Georgia fire department convoy and an Alabama newspaper that was sending trucks the next morning. The supplies WCPSS employees collected were then sent to Biloxi, Mississippi, where the Pedersens were told they were very much needed.
We send our thanks and congratulations to all of the WCPSS employees who are showing their compassion for our fellow citizens in the Gulf States, in ways large and small.
(Here's a listing of some of the school-based efforts to help through the Wake Kids for Katrina campaign.)
