Application Periods

Apply to Attend a New School Next Year, 2017-18

  • View policies for hardship transfer requests >

The official hardship transfer request period has concluded. However, families who have recently had a change of address or other life-changing event may submit a transfer request.

The Office of Student Assignment is authorized to grant transfer requests for the following reasons, if capacity and other resources are available at the school to which reassignment is requested:
    • Request to be assigned to a school where a sibling is currently attending the school and will continue to attend the school for the following school year.
    • Requests to align school calendars for siblings in grades K-8.
    • Request to be reassigned to the student’s base school.
    • Request to remain at the student’s current school due to a Board of Education approved change in assignment.
    • Request from employees for their students to attend the same school, campus where the parent is employed, or the same calendar on which the parent is employed.

The Office of Student Assignment is authorized to grant or deny transfer requests for reasons other than those listed above, is in keeping with the goals of the Board’s assignment plan and the efficient use of school system resources, considering both the sending and receiving school.

Due to overcrowding, WCPSS administration is denying all transfer requests to certain schools for the 2017-18 school year. Please note that if a school is open to transfers, that does not guarantee a request will be granted. Check school status.

Any requests submitted during this application period that are denied by staff may be appealed to the Board of Education.
  • View application policies for calendar option schools >

Calendar option application results will be posted to parent accounts Wednesday, March 8 at 8 a.m. Check your results.

    Who is eligible to apply:
ONLY students enrolled or pre-registered to attend a Wake County Public School for the 2017-2018 school year. Any application submitted for a student that is not enrolled or pre-registered for the 2017-18 school year will not be processed. Students not currently attending a WCPSS school will need to pre-register at their base school starting Jan. 5, 2017. Find your base school.

If you are planning to apply for your calendar option, you will want to participate in the Calendar Application process described on this page.

Elementary and middle school parents and parents whose student is assigned to Southeast Raleigh HS have an opportunity to request assignment to a school with a different calendar.

    Know your options
    • Type in your address to view your calendar options. (Note that some assignments could change pending school board approval of the 2017-18 Enrollment Plan.)
    • Calendar options are granted based on space availability and are not guaranteed. View priorities.
    • For some addresses, two calendar options are offered to allow a greater likelihood of available seats. For best results, parents should choose both options to improve their chances of getting seated in a school with their desired calendar.
Track assignments for year-round schools: Note that getting a seat in a year-round school does not guarantee a track assignment. Principals make decisions about track assignments after the transfer period. Track assignments are made with consideration to parent input, siblings, grade level scheduling, and mandatory class size limits. All track assignments are made at the school. Families applying for a year-round school will be asked to rank the four tracks when they submit their online application. All effort will be made to honor an existing track when a student moves from one year-round school to another year-round school, but this is not guaranteed. Notification of track change requests for existing students at a school and track assignments for students new to the school will be given mid-March. All track assignments are subject to change based on enrollment variations. Families should work with the school staff at your school to discuss track assignments.

    Transportation
Bus transportation is provided to calendar option students, unless they live in the walk zone.

    How to apply
Request a calendar change online Feb. 22-28. All requests for a calendar option assignment must be made during this period. No other opportunity will be provided to request your calendar option school. Notification of your application results will be posted to your online application account on March 8.

    Applicant pool
    • Applicants not seated will remain in an applicant pool and may be seated in April if seats become available. (Numbered waitlists will no longer be used, as seat availability changes with each application selection.)
    • Assignments made from the applicant pool will be posted to parent online accounts in the spring. Parents will receive an email when the applicant pools have been processed.
    • No additional assignments to calendar option schools will be made after April.
    • You can remove your student from the applicant pool if you no longer wish for your student to be considered for a seat. Login to your online application account to remove your student from the applicant pool.

    No appeals
Students who do not receive a calendar seat may not appeal the decision.

    How students are selected
Selection is based on seat availability. Prioritized selection criteria are used to fill available seats. More information will be posted.

Only requests based on one of the five reasons listed below will be processed during the Early Transfer Application period.

    • Request for an entering grade student to be assigned to a school where a sibling attends and will continue to attend the school for the 2017-18 school year. The early transfer application period is the only time sibling requests will be approved. Parent must provide their own transportation to and from school. School district transportation will not be provided. Request an early transfer online Feb. 22-28, 2017.
    • Request to be assigned to your base school* for the 2017-18 school year. Neighborhood busing is provided for students attending their base school, unless they are in the walk zone. With neighborhood busing, students may walk to a location centrally located to students assigned to that stop. The bus travels to a number of neighborhood stops and then delivers students to their school. In the afternoon, students are returned to the neighborhood stop to make their way home. Request an early transfer online Feb. 22-28, 2017.
    • Request to remain at your current school after a Board of Education approved change in assignment, also known as “grandfathering.” Learn more about Board of Education approved grandfathering provisions. Parent must provide their own transportation to and from school. School district transportation will not be provided. Request an early transfer online Feb. 22-28, 2017.
    • Request for a sibling to be assigned to a school where an older sibling is also eligible to "grandfather" as a result of a Board of Education approved assignment change. The early transfer application period is the only time grandfathering requests will be approved. Parent must provide their own transportation to and from school. School district transportation will not be provided. Request an early transfer online Feb. 22-28, 2017.
    • Request from full-time employees for their students to attend the same school/campus where the parent is employed. Parent must provide their own transportation to and from school. School district transportation will not be provided. Request an early transfer online Feb. 22-28, 2017.

*Back-to-base applications to capped schools will be approved pending seat availability and date of established domicile. Students may need to be assigned to an overflow school until a seat becomes available.
