BYOD Policies and Procedures

  • Requirements

    Parents and Students

    • Must sign and submit WCPSS Technology Consent form.
    • Must sign and submit East Cary MS BYOD contract.
    Student Participation and Conduct
    • Students must adhere to the WCPSS Responsible Use Policy (WCPSS Policy 3225)
    • Before bringing a device to school to use for instructional purposes, students and parents must have signed the technology consent form giving the student permission to use technology devices at school and the school BYOD contract.

     Administrators have the right to collect and examine any device if the situation warrants,  Students' privileges to participate in our BYOD program will be revoked if students fail to follow BYOD policies, expectations, and procedures.

     

  • Policies

    Student Conduct / Usage

    • Students will not be able to print from their personal devices due to infrastructure limitations at this time.
    • Students should not touch other students' personal devices.  Students may only touch their own devices.  Purposefully damaging other students' devices or infecting the BYOD network will result in disciplinary action.
    • Students must respect the privacy of others.  No photos or videos should be taken of anyone unless instructed by the teacher for instructional purposes.
    • Students must be on the school network (Wake-BYOD) while on their personal devices at school.  Students are not allowed to use the data plan (i.e. 3G/4G)  on their devices while on campus. 
    • Students are fully responsible for their devices.  Students must ensure that their devices are securely stored when not in use. Devices should not be left at the school after the end of the academic day.
    • Students must troubleshoot their own devices.
    • Students will be responsible for bringing their devices to school each day.  If a student forgets their device, WCPSS BYOD policy prevents students from having their devices brought to school.  No devices may be dropped off at the office for students to pick up.
     

    Personal Safety

    • Students are not permitted to use device for personal texting, e-mail, or social media.
    • Students should not post personal contact information on web-based sites or apps without parent or teacher permission .
    • Students should not agree to meet someone online in person.
    • Students should report any inappropriate messages and content which they receive on their devices to their teachers.


    Campus-wide Management

    NO DEVICE ZONE: Students' devices should be stored and not out in the open in the following places:

    • Bathrooms
    • Locker rooms
    • Cafeteria
    • Hallways, Breezeways, and Courtyards during transition times
    • Other non-instructional times (ie. assemblies)

    Instructional and Educational Usage

    • Students may use their devices for instructional and educational websites and apps approved by teacher.
    • Students may use their devices for Internet searches for research-based project.
    • Students may use their devices for instructional video streaming, such as Discovery Education, flipped videos, and other teacher-directed media.
    • Students may use their devices for other teacher-approved instructional activities.

  • Procedures

    Classroom Management

     

    BYOD Stoplight

    RED -  All devices stored away (Devices should be stored away in lockers, backpacks, purses or pockets)
    YELLOW - Devices parked and ready for educational use
    GREEN - Devices in use for instructional purposes 

     
    Parking Your Device
    When devices are "parked" during a lesson, the devices should be placed on the students' desks face down (small devices) or under the desk (laptops) until the teacher gives the green light.
     

     Screen Checks

    Teachers will perform screen checks to ensure that students are following directions and visiting appropriate and approved websites and apps and that students are on the filtered school network (WAKE-BYOD) and not a 3G/4G network.

     
    Device Check
    At the end of each class period in which devices are used, teachers need to perform a device check. This is where students will ensure they have their own device in their possession prior to leaving the classroom allowing students to make sure they have their devices throughout the day.
