Being the Magnet School for Leadership and Technology, we at SRMHS have been able to adapt the New Tech model to include additional opportunities for student achievement. Student leadership is developed and fostered daily through collaborative challenges in every New Tech class. Our New Tech students are encouraged to participate in Dr. Stephen Edwards’ iLead 21 courses, which were first taught at SRMHS. Our students have also created the New Tech Council – a student-led organization that offers students a clear voice in the direction of the program at SRMHS.
Our students have access to extensive technology resources, including a 1:1 student-to-computer ratio in all New Tech classes. Each New Tech classroom has over 25 Linux-based Thin Client computer work stations and one iMac for digital music and video editing. Our students also have access to four complete Mac labs, the full Adobe Creative Suite of software, class sets of iPads, a class set of HP ProBooks for our New Tech Science labs, and so much more!
The New Tech Classroom:
New Tech at SRMHS offers state-of-the-art classrooms that are conducive to hands-on learning. In lieu of traditional desks and chairs, the New Tech rooms offer students a real business workspace with computer stations and conference tables. By placing students in this environment, student engagement is pushed to new heights, and collaboration and innovation become daily occurrences. Some classrooms have been designed to house our paired course offerings; these rooms have a movable partition allowing two different curricula to be interconnected within a single project. By blending curricula, New Tech classes further promote critical-thinking and model real world scenarios.
