Dropout Prevention
To help students stay in school, the Department of Guidance and Social Work provides program leadership within the system. Lowering the dropout rate has been a major goal of Wake County Public Schools for the past ten years.
Counselors and social workers work closely with other school professionals to ensure that every child has a chance to succeed in school and graduate. In addition, the department coordinates two programs designed to meet these goals:
- The in-school suspension program at each middle school offers students an opportunity to stay in school if they have committed an offense that would otherwise place them out of school for a short time.
- The after school assistance program provides tutoring and other academic assistance to high school students after regular school hours.
