Richard Milburn High School is committed to enabling students to maximize learning opportunities, to achieve success, and to increase skills in the academic and work experience through a non-traditional program.
Richard Milburn High School (RMHS) believes that all students can achieve in a positive challenging learning environment that engages their interests and develops their individual abilities. RMHS recognizes and honors the strengths and intrinsic worth of each individual. RMHS provides students opportunities to develop confidence, self-reliance, tolerance, and civic responsibility in our rapidly changing society.
Student Eligibility:
To be eligible for enrollment in Richard Milburn High School a student must be all of the below:
- A Wake County resident
- Long-term suspended from a Wake County Public School System middle school or high school
- Assigned to Richard Milburn High School by the Wake County Public School System discipline review committee
Number of Students:
In an agreement between the Wake County Board of Education and Richard M. Milburn High School, INC., RMHS will provide a non-traditional educational program for a minimum of 130 WCPSS high school and middle school students.
Referral Process and Intake:
Upon completion of due process, the due process office makes a referral of a student to the school. The RMHS staff assists students and parents through an intake and assessment process, which includes an interview, transcript evaluation, schedule development, completion of registration forms, and program orientation.
Program:
RMHS customizes educational programs to meet the individual educational needs of each student, with a focus on completing courses to graduate with a high school diploma. In addition, the program offers a work-study component as an integral part of the overall program. RMHS develops a personalized education plan to identify graduation requirements for each student. RMHS programming includes: Transition to Career and Life Strategies, Basic Skills, Core Academic Courses, and Counseling
Transition to Career/Life Strategies:
The School-to-Work program at Richard Milburn High School includes a mandatory transition to career/life strategies for students. The life strategies class centers around career goals, interviewing techniques, resume writing, and workplace skills. A combination of personal life and occupational skills are offered.
Over an eight-week period, students complete numerous exercises that will prepare them for the world of work. Students are challenged to develop interpersonal skills.
The School-to-Work program is a very successful part of the Richard Milburn High School experience. Last year seventeen (17) students were in the work study program, making progressive transitions to the world of work.
Basic Skills:
RMHS evaluates basis skills of all students to identify skills in reading, writing and math. Students deficient in basic skills must complete the basic skill component for high school credit.
Core Academic Courses:
In a classroom setting, RMHS offers the traditional curriculum of social studies, language arts, mathematics and science. For high school credit, RMHS includes external learning, independent study and concurrent enrollment in nearby post secondary programs.
Counseling:
RMHS's counselor is available for daily-scheduled and ad-hoc counseling sessions with students and parents. The transition to work coordinator offers job counseling.
Transitioning out of the program is a major ongoing process. Beginning day one, RMHS uses the returning to the base school as the major objective and the motivating force with students. There is an ongoing dialogue with the base school and teacher/counselor at RMHS. At the end of each student's tenure at RMHS, the RMHS counselor sets up a re-entry conference at the base school. The student, parents, RMHS counselor, and base school representatives meet to discuss re-entry issues. The goal of RMHS is to return each student to his base school with a better chance to succeed and complete high school.
Parent Involvement:
Parents/guardians of RMHS students must:
- Participate in intake conferences
- Sign the application to attend RMHS
- Provide transportation
- Actively participate as requested by the school
- Attend Open House
- Participate in transition conference at the base school as a prerequisite for the student's re-entry into the base school
Location:
Presently, RMHS is located in leased space at 2720-A Discovery Drive in North Raleigh. RMHS is in the process of leasing a more central location, which will afford students easy access to public transportation and be more centralized for all students.
