Brooks Museums Magnet Elementary School, supported by the museum community, is dedicated to creating a unique learning environment in which students discover the joy of learning. In order to create this museums/project-based approach to learning, Paideia principles are applied to instruction. Paideia is based on the assumption that human beings are active learners. The teacher assumes the role as a facilitator for student learning as opposed to lecturer. The students generate questions, research, participate in seminars in which they are involved in thoughtful and organized conversations about specific ideas, and collaborate with each other in the creation of projects. As part of the museums theme, students may work alongside professionals in apprenticeships.

This unique learning environment allows students to use the museums' collections and exhibits as springboards for exploration and engaged study in various areas of the curriculum. Students create exhibits and displays throughout the school to share their learning. Brooks is transformed into a living museum where students, staff, and parents explore, learn, and reflect. Students have the opportunity to continue the museums program at the middle school level at Moore Square Museums Magnet School.
