Montessori

The Montessori program at Poe Montessori Magnet School invites rather than imposes learning. Children learn in a secure, happy environment where they are challenged by innovative materials and the use of computers and other technologies.

Unique Features
  • Self-directed learning using innovative materials
  • Multi-age setting
  • Interdisciplinary curriculum
  • Uninterrupted work cycles

Instructional methods of this program, grounded in the teaching philosophies of Dr. Maria Montessori, are based on the belief that children have an innate curiosity and a need to learn and will self-educate if allowed to do so naturally according to their developmental levels. The Montessori classroom captures the curiosity of the child and builds on it. Children learn at their own pace based on their individual interests and developmental levels.

Learning in a Montessori classroom is a process that involves the whole child. The intellectual, physical and social needs and interests of children are inseparable and equally important. Montessori students develop a positive attitude about learning, along with a positive self-image and a strong sense of independence and responsibility. They work in a multi-age setting that promotes respect and sharing and the reinforcing of knowledge between older and younger students.

Classes, directed by Montessori-trained teachers, are limited in size to assure individual attention. The program includes pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade. Parents who apply for the program should understand that they are making a commitment to a total preschool-elementary Montessori program. The program is in the process of being certified by the American Montessori Society.
