Named a School of Distinction for the past four years, Joyner Elementary offers instruction in all core subject areas with emphases in communication and writing. Students involved in project-based learning, benefit from full-time technology and curriculum specialists. Skills are developed through experiences in a video production studio, publishing center, and a multimedia technology lab.
A dual language immersion program is offered in which students have the opportunity to develop basic communication skills in Spanish and English. In this dual language program, the North Carolina Standard Course of Study objectives are met through instruction offered in both languages. Joyner students not involved in the dual language immersion receive weekly instruction in Spanish. Spanish cultural themes are integral parts of the Joyner learning environment.
A Science-Go-Round welcomes scientists to all classrooms each year where students enjoy a broad array of scientific demonstrations by professionals in the community. This event is enhanced by special presentations from local museums and it culminates in the annual Science Fair.
Teachers, through collaborative planning with the technology, media, and curriculum specialists, have the opportunity to plan specialized units of study. Joyner students produce a daily news show, videotape special projects and events, create multimedia presentations, publish their writing, and host author's teas.
