The program is designed to develop understanding of major systems (technological, communications, and cultural) which influence the condition of our global village. The international studies program attracts students from many different countries. These face-to-face experiences with other cultures that make global studies come alive.
The international magnet gives students an opportunity to individualize their education. Students receive a solid core of instruction in essential subjects, and elective classes offer a variety of learning options and experiences. Kindergarten through second grade students may participate in as many as eight elective courses per year. Students in grades three through five may take 12 elective classes each year. As one of their elective courses, students may choose from an array of five foreign languages: French, Spanish, German, Japanese, and Chinese.
In technological and communications electives, students may take advanced computer, photography and video elective classes. In these cours- es they learn how to develop and print black and white film, use video equipment in the production of an in-house television news program that is broadcast to all classrooms, and use computers to communicate with others around the world. Technology plays an important role in the curriculum of the international studies magnet program.
