Creative Arts & Science

Charles R. Bugg and Mary P. Douglas Creative Arts and Science Magnet schools are two of several schools nationwide using the "A+" approach to learning. This approach, based on the research of Harvard professor, Howard Gardner, recognizes that human development consists of eight intelligences: musical, linguistic, kinesthetic, spatial, logical-mathematical, interpersonal, intrapersonal and natural. The Creative Arts and Science Program is designed to develop the multiple intelligences of children.

Unique Features
  • Daily instruction enhanced by visual and performing arts
  • Staff trained to develop multiple intelligences of children
  • Discovery-based science with a science specialist

Certified teacher/artists provide arts instruction for all students in four disciplines a week: visual arts, music, dance, and theater arts. These artists also work with classroom teachers in using the arts to explore academic subjects. Instruction and learning are interdisciplinary.

Another outstanding feature of the program is its emphasis on science. Science merges with the arts to provide opportunities for students to explore their multiple intelligences and diverse learning styles. Students use multimedia and telecommunications as tools of expression. Students experience hands-on, discovery-based science with a science specialist.

The schools benefit from numerous partnerships with community agencies. These organizations are in partnership with the schools to strengthen the instructional program. Joint ventures include providing consultation, financial support, after-school programs, and professional development for teachers.
