Classical Studies

The classical studies magnet program puts a fresh, new face on the "three Rs" - the basics of education. Students concentrate on fundamentals like reading, writing, and science in an atmosphere that nurtures creativity.

The classical studies magnet has an extended, two-hour period for language arts each day. Classical literature is an emphasis of the program, and students have many opportunities to read and develop an appreciation for classical literature. Second through fifth grade students participate in the Junior Great Books program.

All students enjoy the advantages of open access to the media center that features a variety of children's classical literature.Teacher assistants are assigned to all grade levels - kindergarten through fifth grade - to help assure that all children get a solid start in reading and writing.

The writing process is the basis for instruction in all curricular areas at the classical studies magnet, and students are taught to write in a variety of genres. There are special activities with students and staff each year that focus on creative writing. Effective speaking is also a part of the communication process, and students practice speaking before large and small groups.

Another focus of the classical studies program is character development. Students examine qualities such as honesty, patriotism, leadership, and respect for others. They learn about these and other character traits through discovery, making connections, and practice.

In science, students conduct experiments in a lab twice a week, gaining first-hand knowledge of the world and its physical laws. Mathematics, health, art, music, and physical education round out the curriculum, assuring that students in the classical studies magnet build a solid foundation in the skills needed for success in learning and in life.
